Manufacturer Opens in Corbin

The governor was in Corbin along with other state and local officials to open a new business.

Smart Wood, a French family-owned company which manufactures ice-cream and coffee-stir sticks, has opened the company’s facility in Corbin, a $15 million operation employing 90 people. The company says they are “capable of producing up to 2 billion sticks annually.” Smart Wood, formerly known as Euro Sticks Group has facilities located around the world. In Corbin, the company used an existing location in the Southeast Kentucky Business Park to house their new operation. The facility plans to manufacture stir sticks using locally-sourced beech wood.

Eastern Kentucky’s supply of beech trees is one thing that attracted the company to Corbin. Beech wood is not only strong but doesn’t much flavor or odor and is preferred for food-grade items.
