The 80th annual Fifth District Lincoln Club Banquet was held in Corbin over the weekend amid protests.  The annual event serves to honor individuals who have served the Republican Party and promoted its values across the Fifth District.

Several leaders in the Republican Party were present and spoke at the event including Congressman Hal Rogers, Senator Mitch McConnell and Governor Matt Bevin.  In addition to the attendees, several teachers and public employees showed up outside the event to protest recent changes to the Kentucky education system and funding among other things.  Many protesters were angry about words the governor said on Friday that were critical of teachers who did not hold classes that day so they could be at a protest rally in Frankfort.

Bevin is quoted as having said on Friday, “I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them.”  Bevin was widely criticized for the statement, and his own party passed resolutions condemning the statement.  The governor has since apologized for his words.

Money, of Gray, was taken into custody on a charge of Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence as well as other charges.  Money was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

A lane closure on the interstate could affect some motorists on Tuesday.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says crews plan to close the left lane of northbound I-75 between milepoints 47 and 48 in Laurel County on Tuesday.  The closure is scheduled to run between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM, during which time workers will install flexible delineator posts.  The Transportation Cabinet says flexible delineator posts are guidance devices used to mark the edges of lanes and curves in roads.  The posts also improve visibility of road and lane boundaries in inclement weather.  Motorists should expect delays and be ready to reduce speed as they travel through the work zone with caution.
